Ads bring calls this week, SEO brings calls for years. How to use both without wasting money.

Both put you in front of people who are already searching for what you sell. The difference is time and cost: ads work as soon as you pay, SEO builds slowly but keeps working. Here is how to choose, and why most growing businesses end up using both.

How Google Ads works

You choose the searches (keywords) you want to appear for, write a short ad and set a daily budget. You pay when someone clicks. The price per click depends on competition for that search and on how relevant and useful your ad and page are.

  • Fast: your ad can show the same day.
  • Controllable: pick areas, hours and budget, and pause anytime.
  • Stops when you stop: no budget, no visibility.

How SEO works

SEO means earning a place in the free results: clear service pages, a strong Google Business Profile, real reviews, a fast site and mentions from other websites. It usually takes months to show results, but every click after that is free, and many people trust organic results more than ads.

Which one first?

  • Need calls this month? Start a small, tightly targeted ad campaign while you build SEO.
  • Very local business? Start with your Google Business Profile; it is free and shows on Maps.
  • Long sales cycle or high competition? Invest in SEO content early; it compounds.
  • New product or offer? Use ads to test which messages and services get enquiries before you write pages for them.

Before you spend on either

  • Make sure your site loads fast on phones and the call and WhatsApp buttons work.
  • Set up conversion tracking, so you know which clicks became calls or messages.
  • Start ads with a small daily budget and a few specific searches, not broad ones.
  • Send ad clicks to the page about that exact service, not your home page.

Questions people ask

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

Start with a small daily budget you are comfortable losing while you test, on a few specific searches in your area. Increase it only for the keywords and ads that bring real enquiries.

How long does SEO take to work?

Usually a few months for local and less competitive searches, longer for competitive ones. Google Business Profile improvements can show results sooner.

Do Google Ads improve SEO rankings?

No. Paying for ads does not change your position in the free results. But ad data can show which searches bring customers, which helps you decide what pages to write for SEO.
